Kendrick Lamar's Bio Kendrick Lamar was born in Compton, California, on June 17, 1987, the son of a teenage couple. His father had been a promising streetball player before being paralyzed in a gang shooting. Kendrick Lamar's parents divorced when he was eight years old. As a child, he often witnessed drug dealing and violence outside his home. At school, he was teased by other students because of his small size and lack of athletic ability. Lamar began writing rap lyrics at the age of 14. He joined a hip-hop group called Inner City Kidz, which released its first album in 2004. The album received little attention, but it helped Lamar gain confidence as a performer. In 2007, Lamar released his first mixtape, titled Youngest Head Nigga in Charge (Hub City Threat: Minor of the Year).
